What is the history of Kalbar?

Kalbar’s story is written into its streets, with heritage shopfronts, homes and churches offering glimpses into the town’s past. Originally known as Engelsburg, the area was settled by German immigrants in the 19th century, many of whom established farms across the surrounding countryside.

Agriculture became an important part of the district, with the rich farmland supporting generations of local families and helping shape the country community you’ll find here today.

You can still see plenty of this history as you wander through town. Stay in beautifully restored properties such as Herrmann House and Wiss Cottage, admire the historic buildings lining the streets or simply take a drive through the surrounding farmland.

While the town has evolved, its connection to the land remains. Farms, producers and country hospitality are still a big part of the Kalbar experience, giving you plenty of ways to discover both its past and present.

For a modern farmstay, Skyline Farmhouse

Modern architecture, refined luxury and lush farmland meld together at Skyline Farmhouse to deliver an immersive country experience – without sacrificing the finer things in life.

Set on 755 acres of working cattle property are two accommodation options. First is Skyline Farmhouse, a sprawling, sophisticated homestead with 360-degree vistas of the countryside, generous space for up to 16 guests and seamless indoor-outdoor living with a pool, spa and firepit all positioned to take in the awe-inspiring views.

For smaller groups of up to four guests, the Barnhouse is a striking modern farmhouse, wrapped in black Colorbond for a bold, contemporary take on classic country architecture. Its clean lines and dark exterior create a dramatic contrast against the serene al fresco dining area, heated plunge pool and surrounding green pastures.

For a historic stay, Herrmann House

A grand heritage homestead in the heart of Kalbar, Herrmann House pairs old-world country charm with a bold black-and-white interior.

What makes the house particularly interesting is its story. Herrmann House was created from two of Kalbar’s oldest homes, dating back to the 1880s. One was already on the site, while the other was relocated from nearby and the two were joined and restored in 2019.

Think wide verandahs, soaring ceilings, vintage-style baths, fireplaces and farmland views, all wrapped up in one beautifully restored piece of local history – and just a short walk from the town centre.

Kalbar Country Day & Hay Bale Trail

Kalbar and surrounds amp up their festivities on the third Saturday in October each year at the Kalbar Country Day and Hay Bale Trail.

Time your visit for this celebration and you can combine a winding road trip playing ‘spotto’ with the creative haybale sculptures followed by a day of market stalls, food trucks, vintage cars, animal experiences and rides in the main street.

So what are these giant sculptures? Well, local property owners transform massive round hay bales into clever, pun-themed pop culture and literary artwork (like past favourites Vege-hay-mite, Mick-hay Mouse and Kentuck-Hay Fried Chicken). Each year they get more and more outlandish, so there’s always something new!
