Just a short drive from Brisbane, the western reaches of the Scenic Rim open up a world of wide paddocks, mountain backdrops and small country towns that are made for family exploration.

From the charm of Boonah, Kalbar and surrounds, this pocket of Queensland blends quintessential country hospitality with kid-friendly adventure. Get ready to fill your itinerary with farm visits, lakeside picnics, leisurely hikes, cosy cafes and plenty of space to roam free.

What to do

Summer Land Camels, Harrisville

You don’t need the hefty zoo price tag to encounter and feed friendly animals – at Summerland Camels it’s free. Get up close with the furry residents, snap a pic and hand feed them some snacks in an experience the whole family will remember long after the photos are printed.

Dial up the fun with a camel ride or step behind the scenes on a guided farm tour and watch the cameleers in action.

The onsite café is well worth a visit for its fresh paddock-to-plate menu and laid-back lunch atmosphere. While you’re here, browse their range of award-winning dairy products, including an assortment of camel milk, cheeses and gelato to take home as a souvenir.

Lake Moogerah

Forget fighting the crowds on the beach, it’s time to head inland for some water fun at Lake Moogerah.

The lake’s expansive waters are ideal for recreational boating, kayaking, water skiing, tubing, and jet skiing. To access the lake, simply unload at the main boat ramp at AG Muller Park.

For the little ones of those looking for a more chill afternoon, swimming and fishing is permitted in the designated areas. Note that you will need a fishing permit before throwing a line in.

Just passing through? Lake Moogerah makes for a great pit stop with public barbecue and picnic facilities scattered across the grounds and plenty of room to throw down a rug with front-row views of the lake. Before you leave, head over to the Moogerah Dam wall to see if you can spot any turtles floating below.

Staying a little longer? Watch the sunset over the water and sleep under the stars at Lake Moogerah Caravan Park to turn your lakeside daytrip into a country getaway.

Mount French

The Mount French Lookout Circuit snuggled in the Moogerah Peaks National Park is a must-do for families. The sealed road to the top makes getting to the summit easy and provides pedestrian access to plenty of scenic viewpoints.

Put on your comfortable walking shoes and embark on a short hike that promises a big payoff with panoramic views.

The North Cliff Track is an easy 700m return trail designed to suit walkers of all paces. Your kids won’t be dragging their feet in boredom here – instead traverse through a lush Eucalypt forest on a bitumen path and emerge at Logan’s Lookout for a reward of 180-degree views of Boonah and surrounds.

Along your journey, keep an eye out for bush-trail rock wallabies hiding in the foliage and peregrine falcons nesting amongst the rhyolite cracks.
