Meet the Locals – Karen Rea

Hampton Estate’s Karen Rea.

Karen and Peter Rea own and run Hampton Estate Wines on Tamborine Mountain.

They bought the spectacular property, previously Heritage Estate Wines, in late 2016 and have spent the years since modernising and updating the grounds and the buildings, which now take their design cues from The Hamptons New York.

A new expansive outdoor area, The Green, is popular with brides, perfect for marquees, or as a place for guests to arrive by helicopter.

Late last year Karen and Peter unveiled their new accommodation offering – eight beautifully-appointed studio suites.

Hampton Estate’s new boutique accommodation.

Hampton Estate Wines is a popular destination for weddings and functions and Karen says they believed on-site accommodation was the obvious next-step for the business.

“We felt it was very important moving the business forward, that we build accommodation on the property to complement the already-beautiful surrounds which include the main reception and function room (Hampton House), together with the Glasshouse Chapel.”

Together with the addition of accommodation, the Reas have recently rebranded the wine business as Hampton Estate Wines, with the wine label now known as Hampton Lane.

We asked Karen to share her local’s knowledge on the best Scenic Rim places to eat, drink and enjoy the views.

My Favourite Scenic Rim place to eat is ….

Well besides Hampton Estate Wines of course, you can find me hanging out for dinner at Three Little Pigs. I love their house-made Arancini and in winter time we love to sit near their fireplace! For brekky I love, love, love Wild Plum Kitchen on Gallery Walk.

My favourite Scenic Rim place for coffee  is …

I’m actually not a coffee drinker but everyone raves about Green Lane Coffee (our neighbour just down the road), but I must say we do make a fantastic Espresso Martini, or Hamptini as it is affectionately known, here at Hampton Estate.

My favourite Scenic Rim wine is …

Hands down would have to be our own Hampton Lane Chardonnay Verdelho. It’s such an unusual complex blend with its vanillin aromas and has such a smooth creamy finish.  I love my seafood and this is the perfect drop to be enjoyed with any great seafood dish. My favourite red in our range is our Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre. You’ll find me on our deck on a Sunday afternoon with a slice of blue cheese, or on those wintry nights by our gorgeous fireplace with a bottle of the GSM.  I’m also a huge fan of the Witches Falls Prophecy Merlot, while my favourite bubbles from our local wineries I would have to say is Heritage Estate Wines’ Sparkling Brut. YUM!

What I love about the Scenic Rim is …

I’m a country girl at heart and I grew up in the Lockyer Valley so I love being back in the country, especially up here on Tamborine Mountain. The change in seasons is really noticeable in the foliage around us. I love the rainy days when we literally sit in the cloud and then the next day everything is breathtakingly fresh and beautiful again. There’s a great sense of community and the locals are always willing to lend a hand. We have met some wonderful people on the mountain who have become great friends.

My favourite Scenic Rim view is …

I can’t go past Hang Gliders Lookout on Main Western Rd. It’s just up the road from Hampton Estate Wines and the sunset from there is truly spectacular. Grab a blanket, a picnic basket and a special drop and you’re set!

My favourite Scenic Rim walk is …

I’ll be honest I haven’t managed to do too many walks around the Scenic Rim as our business seems to keep me very busy, however I’ve completed the Witches Falls National Park walk on numerous occasions. The Toolona Creek Circuit up at Lamington National Park is also quite spectacular.  I love a good waterfall and it doesn’t disappoint.
