Meet the Locals – Innes Larkin
Innes Larkin, and his wife Tracey, are behind the successful Scenic Rim bush retreat, Mt Barney Lodge.
They offer visitors a relaxed, safe and accessible ‘back to nature’ experience on their scenic property at the base of Mount Barney, just outside Rathdowney.
Mt Barney Lodge is a favourite with school camps, work groups, families and hiking groups, who stay and explore the bushland surrounding the property.
Innes is a skilled and knowledgeable climber and regularly leads groups of walkers on the tracks up Mt Barney.
Innes and Tracey are preparing to launch a new product to market in March, called The Three Peaks Challenge.
We asked Innes to share his local’s knowledge of his favourite Scenic Rim spots to eat, drink and enjoy the views.
My favourite place to eat out in the Scenic Rim
It has to be Pietro’s pizza caffe. It is so surreal and extraordinary that you can only understand how good it is by partaking. Not only is the pizza amazing but the experience blows away everyone I take there. Recently I took my fellow board members from Ecotourism Australia and they rated it the stand out experience. From the Italian tiled entrance statement to the sculptures to stories regaled by Pietro (and of course Desley who actually does all the work) this is a must do culinary experience!!!
My favourite coffee spot
It has to be on top of any of the mountains in the Scenic Rim. As local coffee is one of the services we provide to our guided clients, I experience some of the most sublime coffee moments gazing out at the spectacular views sharing a sense of accomplishment with wonderful people who have earned there coffee by scrambling for up to six hours up a mountain.
My favourite place in the Scenic Rim …
This is such a difficult question because there are so many spots that make me happy I can’t choose one… but if I was to list a few they would be:
- Waterhole – Lower Portals
- Picnic spot – Cleared Ridge
- Drive – Burnett Ck Rd onto White Swamp Rd towards Boonah border gate
- Mountain Scape – Top of Mt Maroon with its 360 degree views dominated by Mt Barney
- Village – Boonah High Street with its welcoming people and trees
- Personal happy place – My verandah with a coffee at sunrise
What I love about the Scenic Rim …
Is the fact that the Scenic Rim community is passionate about protecting their rural lifestyle and natural heritage. I am proud to be a part of that sense of place and hope the next generation continues to value what our regions name is – The Scenic Rim
My favourite Scenic Rim view is …
It would not be me if I didn’t mention my favourite view being three-quarters of the way up Logan’s Ridge of Mt Barney at a protruding rocky outcrop we have named Chase’s chair after a mate I went to Ama Dablam in Nepal with. The view is made all the more sweet by the exposed scrambling it takes to tackle this section of the Ridge… Love it!!!
