Australia Day Weekend Community-based Activities – join in the local fun!

Dugandan Dive – 23 January 2010

The annual fundraising event, known as The Dugandan Dive is to be held on the Australia Day long weekend 2010.
Skydivers will be participating in this event on behalf of The Cancer Council Queensland to raise funds to help Queenslanders affected by breast cancer.
The Dugandan Dive has raised over $70,000 for breast cancer since 2007, and is aiming to beat the 2009 total of $23,000.
This event features: Skydive, Brass Band, Trash & Treasure Market Stalls, Interviews with Cancer Council reps, Gumboot Tossing, Cow Poo Lotto Judging, and lots of fun activities for the kids!

Gala Dinner Supports Regional Artists – Saturday March 27

The Boonah & District Cultural Foundation has gone Italian.
Don’t miss the Foundation’s annual Stars of the Future Gala Dinner, which raises money for cultural and artistic development in the region.
Scenic Rim foodies, Desley and Pietro Agnoletto of Classi di Cucina Italiana, will serve a beautiful Italian meal to guests who are assured a great night of entertainment.
Live entertainment will be provided by Brisbane-based Italian singer Rosanna Napur ahead of the main event – a lively charity auction which always produces great laughs.
Tickets are $60 ($55 for Friends of the Foundation) and includes a glass of champagne, three-course meal and entertainment. Tickets are available from The Cultural Centre in Boonah. The event begins at 7pm.

Moogerah Passion Play – March 27 and 28, April 2 and 3

Lake Theatre on the shores of Lake Moogerah, via Boonah.

Open air dramatic account of the life, death and resurrection of Christ portrayed by a cast of 60 from more than 11 denominations. The Lake Theatre was the first purpose-built site of a passion play in Australia and with its backdrop of mountain and lake, it is reminiscent of the Galilee area of the Holy Land.  Free entry, donation welcomed.

Open Studios of the Scenic Rim

EVERY weekend during May 2010, Scenic Rim Artists will open their studio doors to the public so you can see how they work. Open studios are situated across the Scenic Rim, including Mt Barney, Canungra, Boonah, Kalbar, Tamborine Mountain, Lost World and Beechmont.
Entry to all exhibitions and art spaces is free and studios are open from 9am – 5pm on the days indicated.
Appointments to view their work can be made outside these times direct with the artist. Most of the work on display in the studios is for sale, and many artists are also available for commission of workshops.
No studio is located more than 90 minutes from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, and of course some are much closer, so don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to experience the artistic brilliance of the Scenic Rim.
The region is home to a diverse group of artists whose work can be seen on a range of platforms.

Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival – June 25, 26 and 27

Now in its third year the festival is a fun, free, 14-kilometre trail where you can see more than 200 scarecrows.

Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre present ‘Dont Dress for Dinner’ – July 16-31

The historic Zamia Theatre which was renovated and reopened last October is leased by the Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre and is used by various local groups including the theatre.  It has recently hosted Jane Rutter and Margie Row’s Piaf performances and is now presenting
Marc Camolletti’s french farce “Don’t Dress for Dinner”.  This runs from Friday 16th July, Saturday 17th, Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th, Friday 30th and Saturday 31st at 8.00 pm with a matinee on Saturday 24th at 2.30 pm.

Shepherd’s Walk – Saturday 17 July, 2010

The annual Shepherd’s Walk leaves from the monument in Christmas Creek Rd and enters local properties. It is held in recognition of the Chinese shepherds and Aboriginal people who died in the Beaudesert district during early settlement. Walkers are bused to Christmas Creek Rd and the local auto club provides lunch. It is a popular event with bushwalking clubs and is always well supported. Wildlife Expo- 18 July 2010

Enterprise Drive (near high school) Beaudesert- 9:30- 4:30. Entry is free.
This expo is ideal for the wildlife lover. Scheduled exhibits during the day include a Q & A session on feeding wildlife, a beginner’s guide to nature photography, a tree identification walk and tips for young artists on sketching wildlife. Displays will be open from 9:30 am and include information from the RSPCA, University of Southern Queensland, Logan and Beaudesert bushwalkers and Birds Australia to name a few. There will also be a pre- expo bird walk with Birds Australia members Sheena Gillman and David Stuart which is an excellent opportunity to learn from the experts. Tour of the Scenic Rim 2010 Cycling Event – 24 & 25 July

The Tour of the Scenic Rim is a two-day cycling event the Goldstar Cycling Club has been proud to present in Queensland’s Boonah area for the last two years. The Tour provides cyclists from all around Queensland and Northern New South Wales an opportunity to hone their racing skills for the upcoming National Titles and enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery on offer.
Heading into the third year of the Tour, it is now well established on the racing calendar and we expect a full contingent of cyclists and their supporters. Participation has been growing each year as the event is a challenge to even elite cyclists, thanks to the hilly terrain and array of courses.

The Drumley Walk – August 12 to 15, 2010

The Drumley walk was initiated by two of Billy Drumley’s great grand nephews in 2005. Billy Drumley was born in the late 1800s in Beaudesert and led the Aboriginal community during a time of great change. He used to walk from Beaudesert to Southport to visit his sister.
Now the Drumley Walk retraces his steps and is held every year to remember his achievements.

Open Studios- every weekend in September, 2010

Artists across the Scenic Rim will open their work studios to the public for September’s Open Studios of the Scenic Rim. The Scenic Rim is home to a diverse group of artists whose work can be seen on a range of platforms. Open Studios allows the public to see the creative process first-hand and get up close and personal with the artists. No studio is located more than 90 minutes from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, and of course some are much closer, so don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to experience the artistic brilliance of the Scenic Rim.
Entry to all exhibitions and art spaces is free and studios are open from 9am – 5pm on the days indicated.

The story for this years performance follows a bored Boonah youth who agrees to create a dance school just to get the grant money to leave town.  He ends up having to make it happen with a group of very, very beginner performers.
An uplifting story not to be missed.
The night will begin with the Combined School Choir and the Youth Music Awards with the winner announced during the night.

Beaudesert Show – September 3-4, 2010.

Beaudesert Showgrounds, Albert Street, Beaudesert. Founded in 1889, the Beaudesert community puts its town and district on show for two days and two nights. Last year it attracted nearly 20,000 visitors to see  4,000 plus exhibits.  The horse section alone has 438 classes, but the show is also renowned for the quality of its cattle including prime beef.

Mt Barney Lodge Birdweek – September 8-12, 2010

Bird week is held during National Threatened Species Week, and it is the ideal time to reflect on and appreciate bird biodiversity.
The threatened Glossy Black Cockatoo and endangered Eastern Bristlebird are both local inhabitants of the Mt Barney Area. Mt Barney Lodge has an onsite conservation project for the Glossy Black Cockatoo, is a partner of the Glossy Black Conservancy, and supports Eastern Bristlebird surveys in the area.
Birdweek – “Conservation through Education”
Over one exciting week, Mount Barney Lodge will be hosting bird experts who will conduct guided tours, slideshows and structured workshops to extend your birding knowledge. This program is suitable for amateur or intermediate birders.
Birdweek Leader Barry Davies from Gondwana Guides (Winner of the 2005 and 2009 Australian Eco Guide of the Year) will be the lead guide for the field trips, and will conduct early morning, day and evening guided birdwalks. Barry also lives within the Scenic Rim, and is well known nationally and internationally for his birding expertise. Other leaders will also be on hand to ensure that the leader to participant ratio is personal.

Free Glossy Black Cockatoo Workshop – 11 September 2010

The Glossy Black Cockatoo is gaining recognition and support in the Scenic Rim as an iconic native species. As part of the Mt Barney Lodge Birdweek program, a free workshop on this magnificent bird will take place. This workshop is sponsored through a Scenic Rim Council environment grant to LACA (Logan and Albert Conservation Association), and hosted free-of-charge by Mt Barney Lodge.
There are a number of man-made threats to the Glossy’s habitat, and these are causing it to continue to slide towards a “threatened” existence. Come and find out an overview of all of the facts, and learn more about the Glossy Black Cockatoo from the experts. Dr Guy Castelles from Griffith University and lead research member will be the guest speaker, and well known SEQ bird person Rod Bloss from BrisBOCA will also present on the day. The workshop will be followed with a walking tour of the onsite Glossy conservation project at Mt Barney Lodge.

Australia Day Weekend Community-based Activities join in the local fun!
Dugandan Dive 23 January 2010
The annual fundraising event, known as The Dugandan Dive is to be held on the Australia Day long weekend 2010.
Skydivers will be participating in this event on behalf of The Cancer Council Queensland to raise funds to help Queenslanders affected by breast cancer.
The Dugandan Dive has raised over $70,000 for breast cancer since 2007, and is aiming to beat the 2009 total of $23,000.
This event features: Skydive, Brass Band, Trash & Treasure Market Stalls, Interviews with Cancer Council reps, Gumboot Tossing, Cow Poo Lotto Judging, and lots of fun activities for the kids!
