Big crowds enjoy celebration of Scenic Rim produce

The second-annual Eat Local Week event was a great success, with big crowds reported for the range of events.
Visitors travelled from Brisbane, Toowoomba, the Gold Coast and from around the region to enjoy the activities which focused on supporting local food producers.
The week culminated in the FEAST Celebration Dinner on Saturday night. The dinner attracted more than 200 people and was attended by State Minister for Agriculture, the Honorable John McVeigh.
Queensland Food Fellow, Alison Alexander, also attended the dinner, along with Mayor John Brent, local councilors and residents from around the region.
The dinner featured a menu made almost entirely from ingredients produced in the Scenic Rim.
The live entertainment was performed by Scenic Rim musicians and the room was themed and styled by locals – including wall murals by students from the Aratula State School.
Good crowds were reported to most Eat Local Week Events.
The Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum was a big success, particularly with children.
The dairy uses four robot machines to automatically milk its herd twice a day. The machines read a chip in every cow and identifies which cow it is milking and keeps track of how much milk it produces, what it eats while milking and how much it weighs.
Cooking classes at The Centre Beaudesert and the Cultural Centre at Boonah were also popular.
The classes were led by Canungra chef Kate Raymont and focused on preparing good, wholesome food, using local ingredients.
Cr Brent says Eat Local Week is about inspiring locals and visitors to incorporate locally-grown and produced food into their everyday lives.
“As well as promoting activities and events which showcase our local food producers and their products, we hope to provide networking opportunities between producers and end users so that Scenic Rim produce is available in more places around the region,” he says.
“The aim is to assist local food retailers, restaurants, cafes and accommodation operators with easy access to the producers.
“The event also enables food producers to connect with their customers and gain first-hand feedback about their product.”
