Treat mum to a scenic escape in the Lost World

Arts in the OlivesThis Mother’s Day escape the crowds and take your mum for a scenic escape in the Lost World Valley for a festival of food, wine and art.

Arts in the Olives is being staged on Sunday May 12 under the olive trees in the Scenic Rim’s magical Lost World Valley, about 90 minutes from Brisbane. The day features artist workshops, artisan stalls, live music, gourmet food and wine tasting.

It’s part of the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Open Studios of the Scenic Rim, a month-long celebration of the region’s arts community.

Arts in the Olives is a popular annual festival of food and art, where visitors can learn batik, blacksmithing, sculpture, landscape painting, photography, relief woodcarving, rug making and much more. Children’s workshops are also available. Book early for the workshops to avoid missing out.

This year Arts in the Olives has a Textiles and Textures emphasis and features award-winning textile artist Therese Flynn Clark, Sandra Pearce and rug maker Bec Anderson.

If you think your mum would prefer a slower pace, pack your blanket and relax by the stage to enjoy the great local, live entertainment.

Scenic Rim wineries host jazz events

Normanby Wines logoScenic Rim wine, spectacular views and sensational jazz … what a way to spend the weekend.
Two of the region’s vineyards are hosting Wine and Jazz events during April.
On April 14, the Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard will host the exciting Clem Four Jazz Band from 11am. Enjoy fine food, wine and contemporary music from beneath the shade of the Ironbark trees.
Tickets are $25 and children under 16 are free.
Local producers will be selling olives, cheese, gelato, jams, pottery and wood ware.

On April 21, Scenic Rim jazz band, The Fassifern Five, will provide the entertainment at Normanby Wines at Harrisville.
Jazz in the Courtyard will run from 11am to 3pm. Tickets are $25 and include hot finger food and great entertainment.

Eat Local Week returns for 2013

Eat Local WeekThe Scenic Rim’s popular Eat Local Week is back for a third course in 2013.
This year’s event will be served up from June 23-30 with an array of activities already in the planning stages.
The inaugural Eat Local Week was staged in June 2011 to promote the region’s agriculture sector, food producers and tourism operators who were passionate about local food.
The week of events includes farm tours, food tastings and produce dinners. (more…)

Robotic Dairy takes message to the people

scenic rim 4real milkThe Scenic Rim Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum has launched a new website and is preparing to release their own brand of milk in coming months.
The dairy is run by third-generation farmer Greg Dennis, who has taken the bold step of rejecting a Parmalat contract so he can process, bottle and label his own milk under the brand Scenic Rim 4Real Milk. Listen to Greg explain his decision on ABC Radio

Wild Lime Cooking School under new management

Wild Lime Cooking School 2The popular Wild Lime Cooking School in the Lost World Valley has new management and a new principal.
Green Triangle Experiences, led by Nathan Overell, now manages the cooking school and the Worendo Cottages. Both businesses were started by his parents Rob and Sue Overell.
The Cooking School will be led by Canungra cook Kate Raymont of Hinterland Harvest Catering. She is offering monthly public classes, as well as special classes for private groups.
Kate will continue the tradition of sourcing high-quality local produce, as well as native Australian ingredients. 
Classes are offered every month and the cooking school is also available for private group classes.

Boutique brewery headed for Scenic Rim

The Scenic Rim’s burgeoning liquor production trade has brewed up another business, with Council recently approving the establishment of a boutique brewery at Tamborine Mountain.
The Beard and Brau Brewery will produce handcrafted micro-brewed beers and previously operated in South Australia.
Due to demand for its product, the brewery has relocated to eastern Australia and sought Council approval to begin operating from a 1.7ha property at Tamborine.
The brewery will produce up to 20,000 litres of beer each year, in 800-litre batches.
“The Scenic Rim is already home to a number of boutique breweries, distilleries and wineries, many of them award-winning enterprises,” Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Jennifer Sanders said.
“We welcome the latest addition to this growing industry.”

Award winners on Tamborine

Congratulations to two Tamborine Mountain food businesses, which have taken home awards recently.
Witches Chase Cheese Co. won a gold medal for its Triple Cream Brie at the Brisbane 2012 Cheese Awards.
Meanwhile The Polish Place was named Best European Restaurant in Queensland for the South East region at the 2012 Restaurant and Caterer’s Awards for Excellence. It’s the third year running The Polish Place has won the award.

Scenic Rim shines at Regional Flavours

Scenic Rim food producers and the Scenic Rim Regional Council promoted some of the region’s food and wine offerings at South Bank’s Regional Flavours event last weekend.
Organisers say the two-day event attracted crowds of about 60,000 people, up about 10,000 on last year and was held in conjunction with the Delectable Festival.
Now in it’s fourth year, Regional Flavours hosts more than 100 of Queensland’s best food and wine producers from 12 growing regions, including the Scenic Rim.
Scenic Rim Olives, Towri Sheep Cheeses, Tamborine Mountain Tea, Cedar Creek Winery and O’Reillys Canungra Valley Vineyards were all involved.
Scenic Rim Council staff were on hand to provide information about the region and promote the local tourism industry.

Big crowds enjoy celebration of Scenic Rim produce

The second-annual Eat Local Week event was a great success, with big crowds reported for the range of events.
Visitors travelled from Brisbane, Toowoomba, the Gold Coast and from around the region to enjoy the activities which focused on supporting local food producers.
The week culminated in the FEAST Celebration Dinner on Saturday night. The dinner attracted more than 200 people and was attended by State Minister for Agriculture, the Honorable John McVeigh.
Queensland Food Fellow, Alison Alexander, also attended the dinner, along with Mayor John Brent, local councilors and residents from around the region.
The dinner featured a menu made almost entirely from ingredients produced in the Scenic Rim.
The live entertainment was performed by Scenic Rim musicians and the room was themed and styled by locals – including wall murals by students from the Aratula State School.
Good crowds were reported to most Eat Local Week Events.
The Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum was a big success, particularly with children. (more…)

Celebration of all that is local

The FEAST producers’ dinner on Saturday June 30 will be a true celebration of the Scenic Rim community.
The banquet-style menu will feature ingredients sourced from producers across the Scenic Rim and cooked by local caterer Kate Raymont.
The walls of the Aratula Community Centre will be adorned with artwork created by the students at the Aratula Primary School.
The tables will be decorated with fresh local produce, artistically-arranged by the Justine, Angela and Tanya from Homespun at Aratula.
And guests will be entertained by eight Scenic Rim musicians.
State Minister for Agriculture, the honourable John McVeigh, will attend the dinner, as will Queensland’s Food Fellow, Alison Alexander.
Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent says when the Council’s Economic Development team first started planning the FEAST dinner they were keen to make it a truly local affair and showcase the diverse range of produce and talent available in the region.
“I think the team behind FEAST has more than exceeded expectations,” says Cr Brent, who is also attending in his capacity as AUSVEG Chairman. (more…)
