Mt Barney advances eco reputation

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

Mt_Barney_LodgeDespite two years of tumultuous tourism challenges, Mt Barney Lodge has pushed ahead with its clear sustainability business goals, and has just been recognised by Ecotourism Australia with both Advanced Ecotourism and Climate Action Business Certification for its adventure and accommodation products.
Ecotourism Australia is the peak body for eco certification in Australia, and aims to inspire environmentally sustainable and culturally responsible tourism. Mt Barney Lodge has retained ecotourism accreditation since the introduction of the very first accreditation program which was known as NEAP in 1996.
This certification underpins the strategic importance Mt Barney Lodge places on the natural environment that it exists in. Innes Larkin, owner of Mt Barney Lodge says “good tourism businesses have a responsibility to protect and preserve, as well as sustainably promote the unique natural environment they operate in and leverage off”.
Mt Barney Lodge now has the highest level of Eco certification, and is a leader with innovative Advanced Ecotourism products. This level of certification means that travellers have an opportunity to learn about the environment with an operator who is committed to achieving best practice when using resources wisely, contributing to the conservation of the environment and helping local communities.
The Climate Action Certification Program is dedicated to ranking the efforts of operators to focus them on reducing their carbon emissions. It allows travellers to easily judge the efforts being made by tourism operators to reduce or eliminate the carbon footprint of their operation. As tourism is currently a highly competitive marketplace, this new rating will give Mt Barney Lodge a competitive edge.
This certification reinforces the two Finalist places that Mt Barney Lodge was awarded in the 2012 Tourism Queensland Awards.

CMCA Rally a boon for Boonah

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Boonah and the wider Scenic Rim are celebrating their great success in hosting the recent Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) National Rally.
The local population swelled by approximately 2000 extra people for the week as the town welcomed over 1100 campervans and motorhomes to stop at the Boonah showgrounds, sports field and golf club.
Mayor John Brent said it was fantastic to see an event of such scale held in a rural town like Boonah.
“We welcomed our guests with a true sense of community spirit and showed them a great time with good old-fashioned hospitality. The town was alive with activity throughout the week,” he said.
Mayor Brent said it is estimated the event injected more than $2.5 million into the region.
“A number of community groups and organisations benefited from the event and the local business community experienced an increase in trade during the rally,” he said.
“Around 14 bus tours were organised especially for the event, so CMCA participants were able to take in everything our region has to offer.
“Many of the rally members had never been to the Scenic Rim before and they will now go on to share stories of their experiences with family and friends. I am confident that we will benefit from the positive after-effects of this event for some time,” he said.
The National Rally took two years to plan and 300 volunteers were involved in its set-up. They laid 2km of temporary water pipes to provide access for rally members and 780m of three-phase cable for temporary power.
