TAMBORINE Mountain artists will open their studio doors to the public next weekend, for the third instalment of Studios of the Scenic Rim.
On May 19 and 20, visitors to Tamborine Mountain can join an open studio trail which takes in about 15 artist studios and artist collectives.
Studios of the Scenic Rim is a month-long celebration of local arts and culture and features artists and art studios right across the region.
While the region grew on the back of rural production, it also boasts a strong and vibrant arts community which is showcased during the month of May.
Sculptor Christopher Trotter will be the artist in residence at Marks & Gardener Gallery on Tamborine Mountain next weekend. His Dr Suess-styled sculptures, fashioned from disused pipes, scrap metal and old machines, are full of personality and life and are instantly identifiable.
This is the second year the Boonah-based sculptor has been involved in Studios of the Scenic Rim and he says it provides visitors with a rare insight into the creative process involved with producing professional art.
Newcomers to Studios of the Scenic Rim this year include sculptor Kate French and landscape painter Fiona Rafferty. Fiona is also a relative newcomer to Tamborine Mountain and says for a landscape artist the mountain hideaway is a 24/7 hub of inspiration. (more…)

The Centre at Beaudesert turns five
Monday, March 5th, 2012
The Centre at Beaudesert turned five last month and the celebrations will continue all year long.
The celebrations began when QLD Governor, Her Excellency Penelope Wensley launched the new Studios of the Scenic Rim booklet on February 28.
In her forward in the booklet Ms Wensley encourages Queenslanders to visit the Scenic Rim to visit the artist studios.
“The 2012 Studios and Cultural Trails of the Scenic Rim is also a reflection of who we Queenslanders are in the 21st Century – a thriving cultural community that is keen to encourage the widest possible audience to share and experience its creativity,” she wrote.
With these words Ms Wensley has summed up the charter of the Scenic Rim’s Cultural Centres so concisely.
The region is very fortunate to boast a range of high-quality cultural facilities, designed to showcase the talents of our local creative artists and performers, as well as a range of touring theatrical performances, exhibitions, film screenings, concerts and other events.
Next year the Boonah Cultural Centre will celebrate its 10th year and over the past decade the centre has welcomed a veritable who’s who of Australian and international performers … everyone from Kamahl to Kitty Flanagan and many in between.
Both the Beaudesert and Boonah Cultural Centres contribute significantly to the delivery of cultural tourism in the Scenic Rim.
The Scenic Rim is a community that welcomes visitors, and is willing to share stories about the distinctive features of the region. The experiences that are offered showcase our sense of place and community. While not everyone would directly associate this with tourism, it is very much consistent with the type of authentic experience the modern tourist is looking for … and our two major Cultural Centres are providing these cultural tourism opportunities every day.
Over coming months there is plenty of new and exciting experiences on offer at the Boonah and Beaudesert Centres, including: (more…)

Hats off for new Boonah Exhibition
Wednesday, February 29th, 2012
Scenic Rim milliner, Kimberley Sakzewski, has lifted the lid on her fantastical wearable art collection at the Boonah Regional Gallery.
Kimberley’s exhibition, Headlines, features a series of adventurous hats which are as much art piece as they are headpiece.
Kimberley, a journalist and film producer, took to millinery in 2007 and shortly after graduating from her studies won the National Retail Awards Rising Star award.
She says hats have enjoyed a resurgence thanks to hat-wearing celebrities like Lady Gaga and last year’s Royal Wedding.
She strives for each of her hats to become an example of wearable art.
Kimberley finished her millinery studies in 2007 and shortly after won the prestigious Rising Star award at the Channel Nine televised 2008 National Retail Awards for her entry in the race wear category. Around the same time she undertook work making headpieces for the Queensland Ballet and Opera Queensland. It was this work that helped Kimberley realise her own work sat more in the theatrical arena, and she’s keen to keep occupying that space.
She creates hats under the label zoo-ski.
“My pieces no longer really fall in the race wear category – although I have had a number of very daring clients wear hats featuring aviator goggles, bull horns and the like to big race meets – I love that!”, she says. (more…)
Governor to launch Studios of the Scenic Rim 2012
Thursday, February 9th, 2012
Council’s Arts and Culture team is preparing for another massive year, starting with the launch of the new Studios of the Scenic Rim Booklet this month by Queensland Governor, Her Excellency Penelope Wensley.
The Governor will launch the booklet at an Arts Dinner at The Centre Beaudesert on February 28.
Council’s Arts and Cultural co-ordinator, Bronwyn Davies, says this year the Studios of the Scenic Rim booklet has been expanded to include participating art studios and art events such as Murri Arts and Art in the Olives, Scenic Rim events and cultural trails.
Unlike past years the Studios of the Scenic Rim program will be held just once during 2012, from May 4 to June 3 and will feature 16 studios with 31 artists.
Ms Davies says the decision was made in response to feedback from participating artists and visitors to past events.
The booklet will be available from Visitor Information Centres, Cultural Centres and Art Galleries and tourism operators throughout the region after the February 28 launch. It features beautiful new photography of Scenic Rim artists, collectors and tourism operators, including a powerful cover shot of Boonah-based sculptor Christopher Trotter. (more…)
