Eat Local Week celebrates Scenic Rim produce

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Scenic Rim gardenWhere does your food come from and who produces it?
Residents and visitors to the Scenic Rim can meet the people who grow their food and follow the journey it makes from paddock to plate during Eat Local Week.
Eat Local Week, will run from Sunday June 24 to Sunday July 1, and will celebrate the Scenic Rim food industry.
It will start with the Zest Fest at Beechmont on Sunday June 24 and will climax with the Feast Producer’s Dinner at Aratula on Saturday June 30.
The focus will be on local farms, food producers, restaurants and the organisations and people who play a part in making locally-grown food more accessible in the region.
The Scenic Rim is a fertile region, blessed with rich volcanic soil, which over the years has attracted some of Australia’s leading fresh food producers.
They are located around the region – on Tamborine Mountain, at Beechmont, the Lost World Valley, Beaudesert, Boonah, Kalbar and many towns in between.
Eat Local Week started last year and was born out of the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Local Living Economies program and as this is the Australian Year of the Farmer, Eat Local Week will have a particular focus on the important role farming plays in the Scenic Rim.
Mayor John Brent, whose ancestors have been involved in vegetable farming for nearly a century, says often people take their fresh food for granted and have little understanding of where it comes from or how it is produced.
He says Eat Local Week seeks to focus attention on these questions and provide some understanding and recognition of the people who grow it. (more…)

Mayor opens new Binna Burra Sky Lodges

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Mayor John Brent opened the new $12-million Sky Lodges development at Binna Burra this month, marking a new direction for the historic hinterland retreat.
The opening comes nearly 80 years after tourism pioneers Arthur Groom and Romeo Lahey first invited guests to stay at their Binna Burra Lodge.
Members from the Groom and Lahey family attended the opening, as did LNP member for Beaduesert Jon Krause and Yugambeh Aboriginal Elder Aunty Ruby Rose.
The Sky Lodges development remains true to the founder’s original vision to introduce visitors to the wonders of the Lamington National Park, however it makes that introduction in a very modern way.
Guest comfort was upper-most on the minds of the Binna Burra board and the project architects, dm2 architecture when they designed the 20 Sky Lodges, which offer a stylish and contemporary alternative to Binna Burra’s traditional cabins.
Perched on the side of a mountain with stunning north-facing views across Coomera and Numinbah Valleys, the Sky Lodges are fully self-contained and have been finished to the highest of standards.
Ann Neal, the granddaughter of Romeo Lahey is the only surviving member of the first Christmas Camp, held by Romeo and Arthur in 1933. She joined Arthur Groom’s son Richard at the Sky Lodges opening. About 220 people attended the opening, before enjoying lunch on the Coomera Terrace. (more…)

Zing into Zest Fest

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

Beechmont’s home-grown festival – Zest Fest – is gearing up to celebrate all things creative, delicious and delightful.
Zest Fest, being held on Sunday June 24, also marks the start of Eat Local Week, a showcase of regional and sustainable food.
Zest Fest’s Sally MacKinnon (pictured with the organising team) says thanks to support from the Scenic Rim Regional Council and local businesses Zest Fest 2012 is expanding.
“We’ve halved the entry fee to $5 per adult and there is no entry cost for children. This means that Zest will be more affordable for locals and visitors to enjoy,” she says.
“We’ve expanded our live music program to showcase five local acts between midday and 4.30pm. Back by popular demand are Will Miller and Friends, Lily White, Jackie MacDonald and Huon MacKinnon (now in a duo with singer songwriter Zinta), and we’re adding the Latin duo “Gypsy” who are Paul and Catherine Slingsby.
“We have a Children’s Program including storytelling, music making and kid’s Zumba.
“A Workshop Program including Zumba, Sustainable Living, and Gardening will run throughout the morning and Beechmont State School P&C is operating a licensed bar from lunchtime.
“And of course, our beautiful local artisans, foodies, crafters, health and wellbeing and sustainability practitioners will showcase their goods and services all day in our ‘village square’. It’s the only day of the year Beechmont has a main street and village centre,” Sally said.
Zest Fest is organised by the Beechmont Business & Enterprise Network (BBEN) to showcase the enterprising businesses, food producers and artisans of Beechmont. All proceeds from the festival support BBEN’s activities to strengthen local business and the Beechmont economy.
Zest Fest is on Sunday June 24 between 10am and 4.30pm (gates open 9.30am), at the Hall on Graceleigh, 1922 Beechmont Rd, Beechmont.

Open Studios Boonah & Kalbar

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

VISITORS to Studios of the Scenic Rim Boonah & Kalbar next weekend will meet leading professional artists and see inside two of the region’s most historic buildings.

Open Studios moves to Boonah and Kalbar on May 26 and 27, where artists will welcome visitors from the Boonah Butter Factory and the heritage-listed Wiss Emporium at Kalbar.

They are two of the area’s most well-recognised character buildings and reveal much about the history of the local area.

Boonah artists Catherine Anderson, Felicity Smith and Rachael Brook work from the Boonah Butter Factory and that’s where they will welcome visitors next weekend. The trio will provide an insight into bronze sculpture, glasswork and mouth art.

At Kalbar’s beautiful 103-year-old Wiss Emporium, a collective of developing artists will gather to welcome visitors and share their passion for their craft. The collective features Louise Mossom (fibre artist), Lisa Kirk (artist), David Mossom (experimentalist fibre dyer), Sue Wright (fibre artisan), Denise Foster (silk artist), Sue Russ (leadlighting) and Uvon McManus (textile artisan).

Tamborine Mountain artists open their studios

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

TAMBORINE Mountain artists will open their studio doors to the public next weekend, for the third instalment of Studios of the Scenic Rim.
On May 19 and 20, visitors to Tamborine Mountain can join an open studio trail which takes in about 15 artist studios and artist collectives.
Studios of the Scenic Rim is a month-long celebration of local arts and culture and features artists and art studios right across the region.
While the region grew on the back of rural production, it also boasts a strong and vibrant arts community which is showcased during the month of May.
Sculptor Christopher Trotter will be the artist in residence at Marks & Gardener Gallery on Tamborine Mountain next weekend. His Dr Suess-styled sculptures, fashioned from disused pipes, scrap metal and old machines, are full of personality and life and are instantly identifiable.
This is the second year the Boonah-based sculptor has been involved in Studios of the Scenic Rim and he says it provides visitors with a rare insight into the creative process involved with producing professional art.
Newcomers to Studios of the Scenic Rim this year include sculptor Kate French and landscape painter Fiona Rafferty. Fiona is also a relative newcomer to Tamborine Mountain and says for a landscape artist the mountain hideaway is a 24/7 hub of inspiration. (more…)
