One of Canungra’s newest businesses is the culmination of an interstate love story.
Chantal Powell moved her successful Barewood Gallery from Bronte to Canungra to follow her heart.
She moved north in January to be closer to her farmer beau, Jason Piggott.
Chantal’s recycled timber furniture and giftware shop has quickly won new fans among the day trippers who flock to the quaint village, and with Canungra locals.
Chantal started the business in Bronte, a beachside suburb in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs seven years ago.
She closed the doors on Christmas Eve 2010, packed her life and business into boxes and moved north. It wasn’t a smooth move as her arrival coincided with the January storms and floods.
Jason’s cattle property at Tenterfield was flooded and he was stuck there for weeks mopping up.
That left Chantal time to remodel the former Canungra Retravision store in the heart of the Canungra village into her Barewood Gallery.
Chantal stocks an eclectic mix of goods. Recycled timber and rustic home furnishings, many of which have been lovingly restored by Chantal; antiques, Mexican-inspired furniture, and a custom made line, as well as fresh flowers and gorgeous giftware.
“Originally I wanted to be an importer, but I wanted to be affordable so I had to start doing my own pieces. I like being hands-on,” says Chantal.
“I never thought that I was going to have a business like this. And I feel so grateful for how it has evolved.”
Her furniture – like her life – melds country and beach culture.
An antique timber sideboard may be given a splash of turquoise paint; a timber table is given a lift thanks to a white-washed finish.
“It’s really important to me to bring the bush to the beach and the beach to the bush,” says Chantal.
“I like to have furnishings that can overlap and which will work in any surrounding, something with a bit of character.
“I try to do as much of the work as I can here myself but I have years of contacts with antique dealers and furniture dealers.
“My shop has a broad range of items some Australian, Mexican, English, and French and just whatever great timber pieces I can get my hands on.”
Chantal and her Barewood Gallery have been embraced by the Canungra locals, who know that Thursday morning is flower morning.
Chantal says at heart she is a country girl and actually spent time in rural Queensland as a young girl. Her dad is a farmer and Chantal actually met her boyfriend Jason all those years ago while growing up in Queensland and reconnected with him recently, after 16 years apart.
“We got together and did the long distance thing for a while,” she says.
“But I had the business in Sydney and wanted to find the right shop before I moved.
“We live in a little place at Tamborine and Jason has a farm at Tenterfield and an earthmoving business on the Gold Coast.
“I had my feelers out in Canungra for a few years … I closed my business in Sydney on Christmas Eve and used that Christmas trading money to open up here. I moved here the week of the floods. The container with my whole shop in it ended up under water.”
Chantal says despite the wet start her Canungra shop is proving popular with everyone who visits.
She’s gaining a strong following for her Australian-made scented candles and lovely giftware. The flowers, which are usually available Thursday to Sunday, are also popular.
“People know they can come in and get a beautiful gift for between $15 and $20 and have a look at the furniture.”
Barewood Gallery is located at 29 Christie St Canungra and is open 9am to 5pm every day except Tuesday.

Last year's Festival winner.
Tamborine Mountain’s population will jump this month, when some rather prickly visitors move into town.
The annual Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival is on from October 14 to 16 and will feature a small army of scarecrows.
The Festival has been running since 2008 and provides great entertainment for families and lovers of scarecrows.
Explore the scarecrow trail and enjoy the Mountain’s charming cafes, craft and antique shops, art galleries and wineries.
Book into some local accommodation and make a weekend of it.
Prizes for the best scarecrows will be awarded and all entrants will be out in their scarecrow best on the Scarecrow Trail which stretches across the Mountain.
The scarecrows will be out on the trail by noon Friday October 14 and entertainment will be on in Main Street on Saturday and in Gallery Walk on Sunday.

A boutique travel company which offers a luxury door-to-door Scenic Rim winery tour says visitors love the region’s scenery and the friendly, welcoming hosts.
Tim Scarisbrick of Eco Safaris Queensland says the personalised Scenic Rim wine tour market was largely untapped until he started his business nearly a year ago.
The region and Tim’s tours are proving popular with groups of friends and work colleagues.
Eco Safaris collects groups from home or work in a Landrover Discovery (six people) or a mini bus (11 people) and takes them on a personalised wine and lunch tour, with stops at some very scenic spots on the way.
When Tim, a university-trained National Parks guide, first started his business nearly a year ago he expected the nature tours to be the most popular.
But that hasn’t been the case and it’s in fact the Scenic Rim wine region which has garnered the most interest.
Tim offers a tour to Tamborine Mountain in the Scenic Rim’s east, and another to the south-west part of the Scenic Rim, taking in Harrisville, Boonah and Mt Alford.
“There’s very little out there in terms of private winery tours and everyone who does the tour says, ‘I’ve been meaning to do this for ages,’” says Tim.
“We have suggested winery tours and we generally stick to them but because they’re a private tour we can also do what our guests like.
“I recently did a tour where we did a nature walk through the rainforest before we went to a winery for lunch. At Tamborine Mountain we have a number of different options, we can stop at the Gallery Walk, or go to the Skywalk or visit the German Brewhouse.
“We might stop at Marks & Gardner Gallery for an antipasto platter … it just depends what people are after.
“On the Scenic Rim winery tour there are less options but people are just thrilled to get out there, they really love it.
“They love the scenery, particularly when we reach Peak Crossing, it’s really beautiful, as is Lake Moogerah and the mountains around Mt Alford. They’re also really impressed with the personalised service that the wineries offer.
“The wineries are more personal and friendlier than many they have visited in Australia and around the world, and the staff are very welcoming. People have also been very impressed with the wines, I explain that while it is a newer wine area the wines have won awards and they are very well received.”
Tim says he offers all-inclusive packages which can be tailored to the needs of the group. He can take groups of six, 11 and 24 and collect from home or from work.
The price includes transport, commentary, lunch and a ‘gold esky’ of goodies for the journey.
“People have a lot of fun on the tours, they just have a great time. They often say, ‘I didn’t realise all this was available. Initially they’re reluctant to go further than Tamborine Mountain but when they come to other parts of the Scenic Rim they realise how close it is, Boonah really is only one hour from Brisbane.”

The event will be headquartered at the Canungra Hotel and pilots will compete for points on the international ladder.

WHEN high school drama and dance teacher, Anita Doncaster, moved to a small country town she expected to find students who had a limited interest and knowledge of the arts.
Five years on, the Boonah High school teacher realises how wrong she was.
Mrs Doncaster directed and choreographed the IGA Boonah Arts Festival’s Calico on the Catwalk show, which received rave reviews from the packed audience. Read all about the Arts Festival here.
It’s the fourth time Mrs Doncaster has overseen the show, which seems to grow more spectacular each year.
The fashions, made from calico by locals of all ages and backgrounds, are interspersed with song, dance and theatre routines, delivered by Boonah High students and even the high school teachers.
Mrs Doncaster says there’s always pressure – some of it self-imposed – to raise the bar each year. (more…)

Event: Foresight for a Local Living Economy- Key Note presentation and Workshop
Date: Tuesday 18 October 2011 from 7.30am to 11am
Where: The Centre, 82 Brisbane St, Beaudesert
Cost: $35pp, includes breakfast
You are invited to join Steve Tighe from Chasing Sunrises for breakfast and a presentation about how the values of Australians are changing and what this means for your business.
This event is part of Council’s Local Living Economy program.
Changing Values & Future Trends – since all strategy and innovation is targeted at the future, the first step to successful innovation is to understand how the future might be different. Steve will present a simple message about how, after understanding how the attitudes, behaviours and needs of society might be different in the future, that an organisation can begin to successfully plan for the future.
Following Steve’s Key Note Presentation is the Planning for the Future workshop, where Steve will help local business and community operators use genuine foresight methodologies to focus on identifying significant future trends.
When it comes to thinking about the future, there are two types of organisations – those that chase sunrises, and those that admire sunsets. To be successful into the future organisations need to develop a culture of chasing sunrises – actively seeking out the impending disruption to their business horizon.
And the best tool for developing unique insights into your industry’s future is Strategic Foresight!

Event: Strategic Leaders Forum
Date: Tuesday 4 October 2011 at The Centre, 82 Brisbane St, Beaudesert
Time: 9.30am till 3.00pm
The Scenic Rim Regional Council and our partners across the region recognise that there is a high level of interest, activity and leadership in the areas of nature conservation, local economy, community development and local business within our communities. In November 2010 the first Sustainability Leaders Forum was held where many of our key business and community leaders gathered to prioritise and discuss opportunities to collaborate and connect our work in order to maximise resources and effectiveness. This proved to be a very successful event and led to the development of many strategic relationships and initiatives between community leaders and organisations.
As a result, we would like to invite you to the second Strategic Leaders Forum on Tuesday 4 October 2011 where we will continue to connect our business and community leaders. Our aim is to further explore how we can all more effectively and collaboratively align, synergise and amplify our work across the Scenic Rim region and our communities.
If you feel you would benefit from atteending this event please contact Marita Tomlinson, Economic Development Co-ordinator on 07 5540 5281 or email marita.t@scenicrim.qld.gov.au

The Boonah IGA Arts Festival has come to close for another year and what a festival it was.
The week-long event – held during the first week in September – was one of the most successful yet and showcased the depth of creative people who now call the Scenic Rim home.
The community event featured hundreds of local residents – young and old – and was attended by hundreds more.
Festival Director, Wilson Neuendorf, says in some ways the festival is a celebration of the changing and growing local community.
“It’s been going for about 10 years now … it would never ever, ever have got off the ground without the people who have recently come into the community,” he says. (more…)
