Community Painting and poetry @ Birdweek Celebration

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Visitors and guests to Mt Barney Lodge can lend their creative prowess to a giant community fabric painting that will celebrate birds, landscapes and the Scenic Rim geology.

On Saturday September 10, regional artists Dr John Jackson and Dave Groom will lead The Rim Community Art & Ecology Project.

They will guide hands-on painting for people of all ages.

Regional poet and writer Sally MacKinnon will also work with visitors and guests to craft words, poems and stories which speak of the regional landscapes and creatures through fun creative writing processes.

Both activities are free and will be running between 10am and 3pm at Mt Barney Lodge. All equipment is supplied.

The painting and poetry created at the Birdweek Celebration will contribute to “The Rim” 2012 community art exhibition and community publication which will celebrate our region’s ancient landscapes and the love our people and communities have for the Scenic Rim region. (more…)

THE Boonah IGA Arts Festival starts on Saturday September 2 and culminates in the hugely-popular Jazz in the Scenic Rim on September 11.
The annual festival offers something for young and old and showcases the very talented residents who call the Scenic Rim home.
This year’s theme is Fear or Fantasy and the 2011 festival features a number of new events and categories.
Festival President, Wilson Neuendorf, says the event is about encouraging as many people as possible to experience the joy of a cultural activity.
Mr Neuendorf says each year the festival is changed slightly in response to feedback. And that’s why this year there’s a new event on the program – Taking it to the Streets. On Saturday musicians, artists and performers will take the Festival out among shoppers along the High Street, offering free entertainment and fun. The Art Award entries will also be open for viewing at the Cultural Centre on Saturday morning. (more…)

Lillydale Farmstay recognised again

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Rebecca Hudson, who runs the Lillydale Farmstay with her parents Pam and Doug Hardgrave, was recently named QLD Young Regional Achiever by the Australian Regional Tourism Network.
Rebecca and her family welcome thousands of visitors each year to their farm near the Mt Barney National Park. Visitors learn about farm life and can collect eggs, milk cows and feed baby animals during their stay.
The ARTN is the peak national body for tourism and the ARTN Young Regional Tourism Achiever is a hotly-contested and prestigious national award which seeks to recognise excellence and passion for regional tourism.
Rebecca has been involved in running the farm for the past 10 years. She grew up on the farm and moved overseas for a number of years, but continued to provide advice to her parents from abroad. She now lives nearby with her husband and enjoys introducing young families to the lifestyle she has always known.
“Because it’s a small business we look after all areas together,” says Rebecca.
“One day I might be in the office, the next day I’ll be with the animals, the next day I’ll be cleaning. It’s pretty amazing … a lot of kids come here and have never seen cattle before. Sometimes it’s their first time seeing a dog.”

Documentary and speaker festival runs throughout September

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

The inaugural Boondocs documentary and speaker festival kicks off on Thursday September 1 with a visit from AFL great Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico and a double-feature presentation.
Boondocs is the creation of one of Boonah’s newest residents, Kimberley Sakzewski, who has compiled a thought-provoking schedule for every Thursday in September.
Kimberley’s professional background is in film and television and she’s keen to lend her knowledge and contacts to her new hometown.
“I grew up in regional Queensland and we always get things last,” she says.
“Why should regional audiences be disadvantaged?”
The event begins on Thursday night with Marc Radomsky’s award-winning documentary Tackling Peace, the story of Israeli and Palestinian youths who unit over a game of Aussie Rules. The film features Dipper, who will speak about the role of sport in peace and reconciliation. (more…)

Cycle QLD event coming to Boonah

Monday, August 29th, 2011

NINE days, 570km, 800 cyclists and 140 supporters – this year’s Cycle QLD event is on track to be a big one.
The Goondiwindi to Brisbane ride leaves on September 10 and passes through Boonah and the Scenic Rim on Friday September 16.
Riders will spend one night in Boonah and a packed touring schedule has been planned.
Cycle Queensland Event Operations and Logistics Manager Graeme Ferguson says the cycle route is altered each year. Sky Villas on track for December opening

Monday, August 29th, 2011

The historic Binna Burra Mountain Lodge is aiming to increase its market share in the thriving eco-tourism sector, with the launch of 18 luxury sky lodge apartments in December.
The Sky Villas will be sold freehold to private buyers and will be available for short-term lease to visitors to the family-friendly resort. They will be managed by Binna Burra Lodge.
Stage one will cost $12 million and is part of a multistage, 15-year redevelopment plan.
Binna Burra Lodge chairman Hal Morris says the business has returned to basics under a new board elected in 2008, simplifying and repackaging its product.
“We aim to provide a modern expression of the things that made Binna Burra strong from day one,” he says.
“The concept of the master plan is about creating a walkable village, with a linking track from the new sky lodges to the existing lodge and down the spine to Campground Hill. We see it developing almost like an island in the sky, or a ski lodge-type village where you leave your car when you arrive and don’t see it until you leave.” (more…)

Love is in the Air

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Love was in the air above Canungra recently, when two blokes decided to ‘pop the question’ to their girlfriends while sailing over the Scenic Rim in a hot air balloon.
Hot Air Balloon Scenic Rim say visitors often choose a hot air balloon flight to mark a special occasion, but never before have they been witness to two marriage proposals in one morning.
Couples Daniel and Paulette from South Australia and Brisbane visitors Chris and Joady (pictured) will always remember where they became engaged – somewhere between Canungra and Beaudesert in the basket of a hot air balloon. (more…)
