Equine

THE Scenic Rim is home to a diverse and booming equestrian industry, which plays a vital role in both the community and the economy of the area. Since its early pioneering days, the region has had a close relationship with the horse.
That connection is still evident today as you drive through the region, past state-of-the-art equestrian facilities, and magnificent, well-bred animals.
The Scenic Rim is home to leading racing, trotting and polo horses, and of course top-flight trainers, vets and jockeys.
Situated close to all major south-east Queensland racetracks, one hour from Brisbane and Gold Coast airports, and close to the regional centres of Toowoomba, Warwick and northern NSW, it’s no surprise the region is popular with racing outfits.
Early in 2009 Queensland Racing purchased the Wadham Park equestrian facility near Canungra, with the intention of making it one of the ‘best training facilities in Australia.’
QR expects to have up to 800 horses in work on the site, as well as developing a first-class training academy and veterinary training hospital. The complex features a 2200m and an 1800m grass track, a 2000m synthetic track, a 1400m sand track, two swimming pools, aqua walkers and a number of horse walkers.
The region is particularly attractive as a training ground for young horses, due to the combination of flats and undulating hills which are crucial in the production of bone and muscle. The weather, mild winters and warm summer days, also makes us a great place for growing young horses.
A day at the Beaudesert Races is the ultimate country racing experience. The wholesome old fashioned picnic race-day comes alive at the historic Beaudesert Race Course. Race horses take to the track several times a year for country race meets which capture all the sights and smells of grass roots racing. The Club features seven race meets a year, including an ANZAC Day race meeting, Melbourne Cup meet and Beaudesert Cup Day.
One of the area’s signature equine events is the Beaudesert Country and Horse Festival. It is held annually in the heart of the region and features a range of events, from the Stockman’s Challenge to the Parade of the 1000 Hoovers. The festival is for both locals and visitors and celebrates the region’s heritage. It is held in June each year.
The region has also hosted the prestigious Tom Quilty Gold Cup Endurance race and is home to a number of leading endurance horses, breeders and riders. Polo is another equestrian sport which is widely followed in the region, which boasts a number of first-class playing fields.
Of course if you’re after a more sedate horseback experience, we can help you too. The region features a number of horse-riding and trail-riding schools which offer visitors an experience to suit their level of experience.
