[...] BOONAH and Kalbar artists take centre stage for the final weekend in this year’s Studios of the Scenic Rim event. On the weekend of May 28 and 29, artists from Boonah and Kalbar will share their creative secrets with visitors to the Studios of the Scenic Rim. In Boonah four of the region’s leading artists – Catherine Anderson, Christopher Trotter, Felicity Smith and Rachael Brook – will be based at the historic Boonah Butter Factory. They will provide an insight into bronze sculpting, sculpture, glasswork and mouth art. At Kalbar’s beautiful Wiss Emporium, fibre artists, painters, photographers and jewelers will showcase their work. The studios are open from 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday and entry is free. Boonah-based sculptor, Christopher Trotter, will be joined by some of his most eccentric and recogniseable friends. He takes disused plumbing parts and scrap metal and transforms them into some very whacky characters. Think Dr Suess and you’ll have a good idea what some of Chris’s creations look like. “For me it’s the opportunity to give things a new life and personality, a sense of living energy,” says Christopher. “I keep the steel’s integrity and I make it work harder.” Mouth artist Rachael Brook overcomes the physical barriers of cerebral palsy to create brightly-coloured paintings which are full of life and strongly stamped with her unique style. My style of artwork is portraiture and surrealism,” she says. “Being a mouth artist is my life and my passion, it’s my drug. My motivation for my art comes from many of my favourite artists, such as Van Gogh, Picasso and Whitley. I started painting when I was living at a disability home. They held a workshop and after that I did some art courses and it went from there. “I paint on my knees as I find it easier to manoeuvre around rather than in a wheelchair. I enjoy doing Open Studios because people can see a mouth artist at work and people are not as afraid of me now.” Bronze sculptor Catherine Anderson is self-taught and creates realistic pieces. Her trademark sculptures include beautiful female figures, horses in full flight and fish. The Californian moved to the Scenic Rim with her ex husband, a rodeo riding Aussie with a love of adventure. She was working as a taxidermist when she met an elderly bronze sculptor and was in awe of his work. “I thought, ‘I could do that, I could so do that,’” says Catherine. “So I got some wax and had a bash at it. I did my first piece for myself. Then I was invited by the Australian roughrider Association to do a bucking horse for them as a fundraising thing. It was my first piece for money. I did it and they sold stacks, even though rodeo cowboys don’t have any money. It sold because it was accurate. When I do a piece I need to know everything about it – I rode the bucking machine, I talked to cowboys and made sure all the details were correct, right down to how the boys held the reins.” Felicity Smith is a multi-faceted artist, skilled in fine drawing, painting and sculpture. Glass is her medium of choice and her glass work will be the focus of her Open Studio . “Glass is like nothing else, it has all the characteristics of liquid but it’s not a liquid. It’s eccentric “Glass keeps you on your toes; it can never be taken for granted. I like that.” Felicity has been working with glass since the late 1980s when she first arrived to Australia and secured a job working in a Brisbane leadlight studio. She works across the board in glass, moving easily between large stained glass feature installations, through to sculptural works and table centre-pieces to bold fashion jewellery statements. Her unique, richly-coloured glass works, are beautiful to look at and functional. The Wiss Emporium at Kalbar will be transformed into an artisan’s bazaar. Artists will be on hand to share their knowledge, sell and display their artworks to visitors. The artists involved are: Romy Andres – fibre artist: Romy is passionate about felt making and blends alpaca and merino wools with silks and lace to create a vision of colour. Lisa Kirk – fine artist: Lisa’s artwork is a raucous riot of colour and celebrates the combination of her ‘given gifts’ and her formal art education. Katherine Ackland – couture dressmaking artist: Katherine has worked as an artist and designer for the past 17 years and holds a Bachelor of Visual art. She combines her love of textiles and fashion to create hand painted and crafted textiles and textile design garments. John Heseltine – photographic artist: John was born in Scotland and has been happy snapping since he was a young boy. He completed certificate courses to perfect his art and has won numerous prizes for his work. He is keen to meet enthusiasts and share his knowledge of photography. Margaret Mauchlan – patchwork craft artist: Margaret has been quilting for the past 22 years and still delights in every new creation. She incorporates historic patterns into her work. Alisa Robinson – jewellery artist: For Alisa Robinson, creating beautiful jewellery is therapeutic not only for her hands but also for her mind. She enjoys the freedom which jewellery design affords her. Full information about participating studios and artists is available online. [...]
